1953/54 Studebaker Lowboy Coupe Detailed Description


The following descriptive comments are from an appraisal done by Jim Winter Collectible Car Appraisals. And are used here with permission. Copying/Use of this material without permission is strictly prohibited!

1. BODY AND EXTERIOR

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Bodywise a restored Studebaker lowboy coupe. During restoration the car was stripped to bare metal and any rusted or damaged panels repaired or replaced (patch panels on trunk floor, under the brake pedal and one fender).

EXTERIOR FINISH: The car is finished in PPG Dutch Orange. Paint quality is good. The car was painted prior to final assembly

FRONT FENDERS: Good restored condition, the undersides and inner fenders are well finished.

HOOD: Good restored condition, the underside is well finished and the hinges and latches work well, fit is good. The hinges have been, rebuilt and the rear hinge support and hood support rod have been chrome plated.

ROOF: Good restored condition, the car was painted with the windows removed.

DOORS: Good restored condition, the hinges are tight with no play noted. Minor adjustment required on right door.

RUNNING BOARDS, ROCKER PANELS & DOOR SILLS: Good original rocker panels and threshold plates.

REAR FENDERS: Good original quarter panels, very well finished underneath.

TRUNK: The lid is in good restored condition, the underside is well finished and the hinges and latches work well, fit is good. The trunk interior is finished in Dutch Orange. No mat is fitted. The air pump, tank, and battery are mounted in the trunk.

GRILLE AMD BRIGHT WORK; The bumpers have been re-chromed and are recessed by removing the pans and altering the brackets. All chrome and stainless steel is refinished on this car.

LIGHTING AND ELECTRICAL DETAIL: Rewired using a Pacific Auto wiring panel and kit.

 Features are;

EXTERNAL ACCESSORIES AND OPTIONS:

 Features are;

  • Radio Antenna (not installed)


2. GLASS

TYPE AND CONDITION: A new windshield is installed with good original side and rear glass. New rubbers, channels and cat's whiskers throughout


3. CHASSIS

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The chassis is a professionally built unit of 2x4 rectangular tubing by Ron Bougie.

Features are;

  • Air Suspension
  • Rack and Pinion Steering
  • New Brake and Fuel Lines Throughout
  • Refurbished Stock Fuel Tank
  • New Components Throughout

MOTOR AND ENGINE COMPARTMENT DETAIL: A GM 4 bolt main bearing 350 cubic inch V8 Casting #1008803 (manufactured in Mexico).

Features are;

  • Carter AFB Competition Series Carburetor (650 CFM)

  • Edelbrock Aluminum Intake Manifold

  • Edelbrock Chrome Air Cleaner

  • Billet Pulleys

The engine compartment is very clean, painted and well detailed.

COOLING SYSTEM: Recored stock Studebaker V8 radiator with stock shroud and 5 blade flex fan.

EXHAUST SYSTEM: Ceramic coated Hooker Super Competition headers to new 2 1/4 inch dual exhaust and mufflers.

TRANSMISSION, CLUTCH ASSEMBLY AND DRIVELINE: Rebuilt GM turbo 350.

FRONT SUSPENSION:  A custom built independent unit based on Mustang II technology.

Features are:

  • Air Bag Suspension

  • Rack and Pinion Steering

  • Remote Power Booster

  • Tubular Upper and Lower Control Arms

  • Custom Built Anti Sway Bar

  • Disc Brakes

  • Borgeson Joints and Shafts couple the Rack and Pinion to the Steering Column

  • All New Parts Throughout

REAR SUSPENSION:

Features are:

  • Air Bag Suspension

  • Four Bar Link

  • Panhard Bar

DIFFERENTIAL:

Features are:

  • Rebuilt Heavy Duty Ford 9 Inch Unit

  • 3:50 Ratio

  • Non positraction

  • New Brakes, Shoes, Drums and Cylinders

GENERAL UNDERBODY CONDITION: Very clean, painted and well detailed to show condition.

TIRES:

  • Front: Dunlop GT Qualifier P195/60R15.

  • Rear: Dunlop GT Qualifier P225/70R15.

WHEELS:

  • Front: American Racing five spoke 15x6.

  • Rear: American Racing five spoke 15x6.

HUBCAPS: American Racing Center Caps

4. INTERIOR

INTERIOR TRIM: The stock seats and interior are trimmed in taupe velour cloth by Case Lindhout. Quality workmanship throughout

DASHBOARD: Restored Stock Dashboard and Gauge Panel.

VDO Gauges are used:

  • Water Temperature

  • Speedometer

  • Volts

  • Tachometer

  • Oil Pressure

  • Fuel

  • A One Piece Upper Panel replaces the stock unit

STEERING COLUMN AND CONTROLS INCLUDING GEAR SELECTOR: A Firebird tilt column and wheel are fitted, painted to match the dashboard. A new Hurst floor shifter is used.

FRONT SEATS: Rebuilt refoamed and reupholstered stock 60/40 split bench.

REAR SEATS: Rebuilt refoamed and reupholstered stock split bench.

HEADLINER: New headliner and recovered stock visors in taupe velour.

DOOR PANELS: Repadded panels in taupe velour. The armrests have been redone in vinyl.

CARPETS AND MATS: New brown nylon carpet.

REAR PACKAGE TRAY: Repadded and trimmed in taupe velour.

DOOR AND WINDOW CONTROLS AND LOCKING MECHANISMS: Stock manual controls, all work well.

GLOVE COMPARTMENT: Restored lid with good original inner box.

WEATHER STRIPPING: New weather stripping , windlace and rubber components throughout.

INTERIOR ACCESSORIES AND OPTIONS:

Features are:

  • JVC AM/FM/CD with removable face plate

  • Two 6 inch speakers housed under door panels

  • Tilt column

  • Two 6 inch speakers under rear tray


5. VEHICLE HISTORY

Purchased from Kamloops, BC in 1989. Driven for two years in stock condition. Built to present condition from 199! to 1992. In storage ever since. Driven less than 200 miles since completion This car is a 1954 model but registered as a 1953.


6. COMMENTS AND OVERALL IMPRESSION

A show quality lowboy. Quality parts and workmanship evident throughout.
