1929 Auburn Boat Tail Speedster Detailed Description

The following descriptive comments are from an appraisal done by Jim Winter Collectible Car Appraisals. And are used here with permission. Copying/Use of this material without permission is strictly prohibited!

1.         BODY AND EXTERIOR

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: A custom built aluminum bodied Boat tail speedster using oak framework built from original Auburn patterns. The body was built using an English wheel and related equipment.

EXTERIOR FINISH: The car is finished in black (upper and fenders) and red (body center), an enamel finish matching the original Auburn colors.

FRONT FENDERS: Restored original units, well finished. Twin side mounts are featured.

HOOD: Restored original steel Auburn hood. The underside is well finished and the hinges and latches work well, fit is good. An aftermarket hood support is fitted.

ROOF: A new oak rear bow and new aluminum folding front bow have been built. No top fabric is installed at time of appraisal.

DOORS: New steel doors were built. New hinges and striker plates were cast. New latching mechanisms are used with rechromed original handles.

RUNNING BOARDS, ROCKER PANELS, DOOR SILLS: New steel running boards using restored original brackets, reproduction rubber and stainless steel trim. New splash aprons were fitted to stock specifications.

REAR FENDERS: Custom built reproductions of originals.

TRUNK: Access to the rear body is by the golf club doors on each side. The trunk area is cedar lined with oak franework. A trunk light is used.

GRILL AND BRIGHT WORK: All chrome and stainless steel is in good condition on this car.

LIGHTING AND ELECTRICAL DETAIL: Rewired using era correct wire to Auburn specifications. The generator is rewired to 12 volts using a voltage regulator rather than the original cutout. Turn signals have been added using the cowling lamps and one extra tail light as indicators. The vacuum and wiper motors have been rebuilt and rechromed. An electric fuel pump and battery isolation switch are used.

         Cowl lamps

         Dual sidemount spares

         Custom built tail lamps to stock specifications

 


2.         GLASS

TYPE AND CONDITION: Non-tint flat glass windshield in a NOS frame purchased in Ohio, USA.

 


3.         CHASSIS

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The original chassis was sandblasted, restored and finished in black enamel. A new fuel tank to stock specifications is fitted. New brake and fuel lines have been installed throughout.

MOTOR AND ENGINE COMPARTMENT DETAIL: The original Lycoming small 8 model 890 has been rebuilt.

Features are:

 

         Balanced

         Pressure oiling system

         318 Dodge rod bearings

         Four cylinder Buda Diesel main bearings

         Bored .030

         New Egge pistons

         Remote oil filter

The engine compartment is clean, painted and well detailed to stock specifications.

COOLING SYSTEM: The original honeycomb radiator is completely rebuilt. Era correct clamps and hoses are used.

EXHAUST SYSTEM:  Original cast manifold to new single exhaust.

TRANSMISSION, CLUTCH ASSEMBLY AND DRIVELINE: Rebuilt 1984 Ford Ranger four speed transmission. Rebuilt Auburn clutch and flywheel with new ring gear. The original transmission and related components are with the car.

FRONT SUSPENSION:

         Rebuilt Auburn beam axle with new bushings and kingpins

         The steering box is rebuilt

         New GM dual master cylinder

         New Mopar power booster

         New wheel cylinders

         New brake shoes

         The shock absorbers are not mounted and require rebuilding

REAR SUSPENSION:

         Rebuilt parallel leaf springs

         The shock absorbers are not mounted and require rebuilding

DIFFERENTIAL: Columbia 4:47 ratio differential has been rebuilt.

GENERAL UNDERBODY CONDITION: Clean and painted.

TIRES: Front: Lester 6:00/6:50x18 wide white wall.
               Rear:
Lester 6:00/6:50x18 wide white wall.

New Coker 6:00/6:50x18 wide white walls are with car but not yet mounted.

WHEELS: Front: Budd wire spoke 18" knock offs
                    Rear:
Budd wire spoke 18" knock offs.

Four new wire spoke wheels are to be installed.

HUBCAPS: Restored original Auburn knock off center caps.

 


 

4.         INTERIOR

INTERIOR TRIM:  The interior is trimmed in black leather to Auburn specifications. Workmanship is good.

DASHBOARD: The black leather covered dashboard and original gauge panel are both in good restored condition.

STEERING COLUMN AND CONTROLS INCLUDING GEAR SELECTOR: Restored stock column and wheel. A new Haven clock gearshift knob is used.

FRONT SEATS: Black leather bench built to Auburn specifications.

DOOR PANELS: Black leather panels with storage pouches fitted.

CARPETS AND MATS: New black rubber mat.

DOOR AND WINDOW CONTROLS AND LOCKING MECHANISMS: New manual latches and locks.

WEATHER STRIPPING: New hoodlace and rubber components throughout.

INTERIOR ACCESSORIES AND OPTIONS:

 

         New Haven clock gearshift knob

 


 

5.        VEHICLE HISTORY; Built from a convertible chassis found in a basement in North Burnaby, BC. The chassis was last used as a power plant for Western Chemical Company of North Vancouver, BC. Only 147 boat tail speedsters were built by Auburn.

 


 

6.         COMMENTS AND OVERALL IMPRESSION: A well built Auburn Speedster. Quality parts and workmanship evident throughout. Less than 1,000 miles have been logged since restoration. Built to drive as powertrain upgrades show.
