1928 Auburn Model 115 Four Door Convertible Sedan Detailed Description

The following descriptive comments are from an appraisal done by Jim Winter Collectible Car Appraisals. And are used here with permission. Copying/Use of this material without permission is strictly prohibited!

1.         BODY AND EXTERIOR

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: A restored (1975-1978) Auburn four door convertible sedan. All body panels are in good restored condition with no wear or damage noted. The rear passenger compartment is remade from new wood and steel.

EXTERIOR FINISH: The car is finished in red and black lacquer with a yellow beltline pinstripe. The fenders and splash aprons were refinished circa 1997.

FRONT FENDERS: Good restored condition, dual sidemount spares are fitted.

HOOD: Good restored condition. The hinges and latches work well, fit is good and the underside is well finished. The original Auburn hood stays are used.

ROOF: The beige canvas roof was installed when the car was originally restored. The top shows wear and has not been raised in aproximately 7 years. A black canvas tonneau cover is used.

DOORS: Good restored original units. The hinges and latches work well, fit is good.

RUNNING BOARDS, ROCKER PANELS, DOOR SILLS: Restored original running boards with new splash aprons.

REAR FENDERS: Restored original units in good condition.

TRUNK: Restored original trunk in good condition.

GRILL AND BRIGHT WORK: All chrome was redone at time of restoration. Most components require cleaning and polishing.

LIGHTING AND ELECTRICAL DETAIL: Rewired 6 volt system using original cloth covered wire similar to Auburn specifications. A battery isolation switch is used.

EXTERNAL ACCESSORIES AND OPTIONS:

 

         Cowl lamps converted to turn signals

         Dual side mount spares

 


2.         GLASS

TYPE AND CONDITION: All glass is in good condition. New side window frames were built at time of restoration.

 


3.         CHASSIS

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The original chassis was sandblasted, restored and refinished in black at the time of restoration. The brake hydraulic system requires attention due to prolonged storage. The original transmission, shock absorbers and realted parts are all with this car.

MOTOR AND ENGINE COMPARTMENT DETAIL: Original Auburn Big 8 rebuilt circa 1975.

Features are:

 

         318 Mopar rod bearings

         Bored .030

         Buda diesel main bearings

The engine compartment requires cleaning and detailing.

COOLING SYSTEM: The original honeycomb radiator rebuilt at time of restoration.

EXHAUST SYSTEM:  Single to stock specifications.

TRANSMISSION, CLUTCH ASSEMBLY AND DRIVELINE: A 1940 Packard transmission with overdrive is fitted. The original transmission is with the car.

FRONT SUSPENSION: Parallel leaf springs with beam axle in good condition. No shock absorbers are used.

REAR SUSPENSION: Parallel leaf springs, no shock absorbers are used.

DIFFERENTIAL: A 1934 Auburn Columbia two speed differential is used. The original differential is with the car.

GENERAL UNDERBODY CONDITION: Good restored condition.

TIRES: Front: Lester 6:00/6:50x18 wide white wall.
               Rear:
Lester 6:00/6:50x18 wide white wall.

WHEELS: Front: Budd wire spoke in good condition, 18"
                    Rear:
Budd wire spoke in good condition, 18"

HUBCAPS: Knock off center caps.

 


 

4.         INTERIOR

INTERIOR TRIM:  The interior is trimmed in black leather (circa 1978). All components show well.

DASHBOARD: Restored original gauge panel and leather covered dashboard, all components operational.

STEERING COLUMN AND CONTROLS INCLUDING GEAR SELECTOR: Restored original wheel, column and floor shift.

FRONT SEATS: Original bench recovered in black leather.

REAR SEATS: Original bench recovered in black leather with armrest.

DOOR PANELS: Black leather pouches in good condition.

CARPETS AND MATS: Black nylon carpet showing some wear.

DOOR AND WINDOW CONTROLS AND LOCKING MECHANISMS: Manual controls. The inner handles have been recast in brass..

WEATHER STRIPPING: Windlace and hoodlace in good condition.

INTERIOR ACCESSORIES AND OPTIONS:

 

         Vacuum controlled ashtray and butt disposer

         Electric windshield wipers

         Rearview mirror mounted clock

 


 

5.        VEHICLE HISTORY; Purchased new by Barney Bowe of Vancouver, BC. Used until 1938 when it was damaged by fire. In storage until 1970 when the present owner/restorer purchased the car. Restored from 1970 to 1979. Driven aproximately 5,000 miles since that time.

 


 

6.         COMMENTS AND OVERALL IMPRESSION: A well maintained older restoration. Built to drive as driveline upgrades show.
